Spend a day on a privately with an English speaking driver tour exploring ALL the Island of Santorini starting from the Akrotiri Excavations, a prehistoric Bronze Age city, frozen in time by ash that fell during the Minoan volcanic eruption 3.600 years ago. Some speculate that this is the origin of Atlantis, a mythical city.
Admire the elaborate drainage system, the sophisticated multi-storied buildings, and their magnificent wall paintings and excavated furniture and vessels that show the former settlements great prosperity.
Then we will head to admire the Red and Black beaches. The red layer of sand at the Red Beach created a spectacular sight! The Black Beach is the largest beach on Santorini and is covered with black volcanic sand. Take the spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the nearby islands. Enjoy an optional lunch of fish or seaside restaurant.
We’ll continue to visit Emporio, the largest village of the Greek island of Santorini. You can look at the historically listed windmills and have an excellent view of the rest of the island. On the hill above the village, you’ll discover the ruins of a fortress from the Byzantine period known as Kasteli, also discover ruin of Goulas which is the square medieval castle at the village entrance. It protected the insider from a pirate attack and you can still see the posts, which were filled with hot oil and were spilled onto enemies.
Then, make your way to the peak Prophets Ilias, Santorini’s highest mountain that stands some 2000 feet ( 600 meters) above the sea. Be amazed by the island vistas surrounding you, and then follow your guide inside the ornate Greek Christian monastery perched at the mountain’s summit. Walk around the chapel, listen to the monks chanting and savor samples of the dessert wine, honey and extra virgin olive that are made on-site.
From here you’ll proceed to Pyrgos, the old capital, where you’ll take a guided walk along narrow paths to the ruins of the Venetian castle.
Our next stop is at a traditional Santo Wines Winery, where you will learn the secrets of winemaking and you’ll enjoy all the tastes of our famous traditional local wines.
Then we’ll visit Episkopi Church. One of the most important Byzantine churches of the island. Built-in 1100 AC and survived the invasions by the Venetians, the Francs, the Russians, the Turks, and the frequent earthquakes.
On our way to the Northern part of Santorini, we will make a short stop in Firostefani to see the famous Blue Dom Church and the caldera, this church is the subject of so many Santorini postcards.
We’ll visit and the traditional village of Imerovigli, which is situated on a higher cliff. The name comes from the word ”vigla” which means ”day”. In front of the village is located an enormous rock called Skaros. It was used to be the best spot to look out for pirates. Until 1800, Skaros part of the land and had a castle on it where all the administrative offices of the island were located.
Continue through the beautiful Santorini countryside to the village of Oia. Built on the northern part of the caldera rim, Oia is the most photographed place in Santorini and place where many artists have found their inspiration. It’s beauty, the traditional architecture, and the amazing sunset.
Enjoy the stunning views of the caldera, where many dwellings are built into niches of the volcanic rock. You’ll also have a panoramic view of the rest of Santorini and the Aegean Sea.
